Keep Your Gmail Browser Connection Safe

First things first, lets get you safe.

If you own a gmail account, here are 2 simple steps to keeping a secure browser connection.

Go to your gmail account.

Click on settings, this can be found at the top right corner to the right of your email address.

Clicksettings

Then select ‘Always use https’ and ‘Save Changes.’

Clickconnection

Learn more about the Browser Connection options.
Read a detailed article in the Washing Post in regards to these new found settings.

Now that we’ve taken care what’s most important.  I’d like to think a good friend William Holtkamp for this amazing find.  At the time of this post, Google Blog has no information on this current setting.

Stay safe.

Tendenci Icon-row Redesign

The icon-row has been a staple in our software, giving you quick access to Print, Edit, and many other options depending on what type of content you are working with. While it’s great that you can see your options anywhere you see your content (given that you have permission), we know that the icon-row can be confusing, particularly to new users. While some icons are intuitive – a trashcan means DELETE on any computer system – some of the icons are less obvious.

With that in mind we have created a new format for the icon-row that allows you to more effectively find what options you are looking for and maybe discover a few new ones you never knew existed.

The new icon-row will give you a few simple options (such as Print and Edit), and have a link for More Options that you can click to see the rest of the tools available to you. By using this drop-down menu, we have space to give you descriptive text links with the icons.

The new icon-row is being rolled out on the Articles module today. Soon to follow will be Press Releases, the Jobs Board, and CMS pages.

Wysiwyg (Text Editor) Firefox 3 Hyperlink Bug

Wysiwyg

Note: This only applies to people using the latest version of the firefox web browser which in this case is Firefox 3.

Our current wysiwyg (Text Editor), which is a 3rd party product created by Cutesoft, has an issue with text disappearing when you highlight it and then click the Insert Hyperlink button from the menu. We are aware of the issue and are currently in communication with Cutesoft support. You can view the support thread here. In the meantime, if you have both Firefox 3 and Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) installed, you can use IE7 to add/edit content.

The new ICANN Domain Name Rules–What do they mean to you?

Lee_jordan_flickr_3
On Thursday June 26, 2008 the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and
Numbers (ICANN) voted to astronomically
expand the availability of domain names from the traditional .country or .com
to almost whatever the purchaser can imagine.  Proponents of this plan
included corporations such as eBay (.ebay), industries (.car), and cities (.berlin).

Starting in 2009, purchasers will be able to buy an unlimited number of
domain names.  While some are thrilled, others are concerned people will
make a lot of money by "squatting" on domain names (for example,
someone could scoop up .pepsi and sell it for millions to the Pepsi Corporation).
ICANN is putting several safeguards in place to make sure this does not happen;
including giving purchasing priority to trademark holders.
Another somewhat unintended consequence to the pirating of these new domain
names is how expensive it is technologically to implement a new completely
untried domain name.

So… what does what some are calling one of the biggest
shakeups
in internet history really mean to you?  For smaller
organizations with plans on staying small, it may not mean much.  For
those of you who are planning on growing, getting your brand trademarked may be
a very good idea.

Financially, getting your brand trademarked can be pretty expensive, but it
may be something you may really want to consider to safely control your brand.
For more information and ideas you can check out the United States Patent and
Trademark
web site.

It remains to be seen what the full scale implications to your users and
internet navigators of this ICANN ruling will be.  We will keep all of you
updated!

Check out our new Tendenci Navigation Editor

We are pleased to announce that the new Tendenci Navigation Editor has been released.  Rearranging your navigation has never been easier with our new drag and drop interface, and it even incorporates some new features.

What you can expect from the new Editor:

  • Drag and Drop Interface for easy move, delete.
  • Click any link to edit the link details.
  • Easily make your links open in a new window
  • CSS class field for those more HTML inclined
  • Options to both save progress and publish.  Save your work as you go without worrying about your live site.
  • Automatic page building!

How does automatic page building work?

When you publish your navigation, the editor will look for links to pages within your site that might not exist yet.  If you use our Clean URL system (ie. link to a page like /promotions/ instead of /en/cms/?123 to generate a URL of www.yourdomain.com/promotions/), then the navigation editor will automatically create these pages for you if they don’t already exist.

The Navigation Editor will produce a list of the pages created and give you options to both Edit and Delete them.

These pages are NOT syndicated, because they will have no content until you put some content in, but don’t forget to syndicate them once they are ready!

A peak at the new interface:

But I liked the old one

Never fear! The original navigation editor will still be available to you, linked from the top of the new editor.  While we make these edits in an attempt to make your life easier, we realize some people have a system that works perfectly well for them, so if the old editor really tickles your fancy, we understand.

A note to Internet Explorer 6 users

We are currently working on support for the new editor in deprecated browsers.  For the time being, the new editor is available only for IE 7+.  You can continue using the Tendenci Nav Editor classic until we can get all the bugs sorted out.

Greater control over your Tendenci site with Template Editor

Tendencitemplateeditor

Do you want more control over the template you see on your Tendenci site? Want
to implement your own custom HTML code? The Tendenci template editor now puts
the power in hands. Very similar to the style editor in both functionality and
interface, the template editor allows you to tweak the layout of your
website.

You may notice that the template and style editor both do not
sit in the template of your website like most Tendenci modules do. We have moved
these tools out of the template for 2 reasons:

1. You have more space to
see your code, which should make it easier to edit.
2. We all make mistakes,
so if you accidently publish a Template that causes some serious problems on
your site, you can quickly return to the Template Editor and revert to a
previous version!

You may be asking yourself, how to I know what areas
are needed on the template? The template editor does some automatic checks when
you click the save/publish buttons that will let you know of possible problems
in the template.

You can find the templates editor in the Tendenci &
Other Tools
section of the console. Don’t forget, if you have any questions
please contact our wonderful support team!

Edit your Cascading Style sheets with our new Style Sheet Editor

Tendencistylesheeteditor

Tendenci web site CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) is now editable by site administrators. The new style sheet editor lets you edit, save, and publish your styles. It also remembers your previously saved styles (revisions) and allows you to restore them if you wish to revert to older styles. Here are some help files that can get you started:

  1. How do I use the style sheet editor?
  2. How do I save or publish a style sheet?
  3. How do I open/restore a revision style sheet?
