  1. Hi Schipul & crew, This is really cool. Writers in the Schools (WITS) does good by making reading and writing fun and empowering for kids. We work mostly with inner city students. Our biggest social media activities are through blogging (witsblog.org) and facebook. We also tweet, greet, and meet electronically on a regular basis. Happy holidays!

    1. We <3 WITS!!! You guys do a beautiful job sharing all of the great work that you do 🙂

  4. I'm posting on behalf of Dance Source Houston, the local service organization for the professional dance community. Our mission is to support and promote the creation and presentation of Contemporary Dance in Houston, support dancers and choreographers in their artistic development, support companies and choreographers in the presentation of their work, create opportunities for performance and develop audiences and community support for dance. We currently use Facebook and Twitter to help promote the dance performances presented by ourselves and our member organizations.

  5. I am here for the Brazilian Arts Foundation, dedicated to building community through the preservation and sharing of the Brazilian culture. We provide low-cost classes in Portuguese, Samba, capoeira and Brazilian percussion to kids and adults on a weekly basis, we host a Free Brazilian Movie Night at our cultural center in the Heights every month, and we created a Seniors Arts Program at the Wesley Community Center. Currently, we are on Facebook like crazy! This has been a really powerful tool in connecting with our kids' parents, friends of students and attracting volunteers for our events and projects.

    1. Hi Stacey! Can't wait for Samba Night in the Heights this weekend! Keep up the great work 🙂

  6. Lawndale Art Center (http://www.lawndaleartcenter.org) develops local artists and the audience for their art. Lawndale hosts over 20 exhibitions annually and serves as a place for people to experience local art. We use social media to let people know about our exhibitions and events, along with an occasional behind the scenes look at works in progress, via Twitter (@lawndalehouston) and Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/lawndalehouston). We also use Flickr to share images of our exhibitions (https://www.flickr.com/lawndaleartcenter), as well as YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/lawndaleartcenter). We have also used WordPress to update our Día de los Muertos Teachers Resource Page (http://lawndaleartcenter.wordpress.com/) and Blogger for updates from our busy staff and interns (http://www.lawndaleartcenterhouston.blogspot.com/). These tools help us offer more content and stay connected to the local community.

  7. WOW! I am overwhelmed by the response… and SO grateful that a computer programming will be randomly picking the winner cause you folks are all doing SUCH amazing things!!!!

  8. Reggie is one the most amazing Good-Doin' folks I know… it was my real pleasure to get to meet him in person this year.

  10. Rebuilding Together San Francisco engages teams of volunteers to provide free home repairs for low-income seniors & adults with disabilities, as well as renovations on community centers, schools & nonprofits each April in SF. We also have a year round program that provides basic safety equipment & repairs, weatherization and energy efficiency for low-income seniors.
We've been doing this work for over 20 years now, yet no one outside our circle has heard about us. But that's about to change! As first ever Outreach staff, I launched a FB page, tweetin' fool (@RTSanFran), making our website more dynamic & have a very enthusiastic Americorp member helping us launch a blog. We are the only organization dealing with housing repairs and facility maintenance, and because we work with such a broad section of SF, are often the community to services and resources.
I'm most excited about our soon to be released blog – I intend to highlight community partners, volunteers, clients, housing & aging trends in SF and more! Where I'm stuck is the “Level 2” in Social Media, I get the basics (start up, different uses & language) but now what?! Thanks for the opportunity!

    1. I love that you've made it through Level 1, Valerie!! Sounds your team is working the online world for offline impact!!

  11. Caring Hands Ministries helps people in need in in southern Appalachia with food, clothes, rent to prevent homelessness, home reestablishment, utilities, prescriptions, and things that don't fit other categories like gas to start a new job with special emphasis on helping senior citizens and families with young children. We are a 15 year old all volunteer ministry. This will be our 8th year doing a community Christmas Dinner on Christmas day. Last year more than 650 people ate and got gifts in this tiny mountain area. People say they can not tell the helpers from the people needing help and that is just the way it should be everyone can be part of making the day better. Last summer someone made a Facebook page for Caring Hands and of course I had to join FB to see what was happening with it. It has been a great tool for staying in communication with key volunteers and finding new ones and for letting people know about ways to help and get help. I had tried other social media before but those seemed to be focused on people wanting big money jobs. This is helping build community.

  12. The Mission of the Sioux Empire Safety Village is; to create safety awareness, promote life safety skills, and provide injury prevention education and training through a community-wide partnership for the benefit of all.
Our Vision statement reads; To provide an environment where individuals acknowledge that injuries are predictable, understandable and therefore preventable.
At this time we are using Facebook to promote our mission and to inform the public of safety issues bith in our area and world wide, along side our website http://www.safetyvillage.org. We have home safety videos in 14 languages for every room in the home that go hand in hand with our Safe House exhibit, and a burned house display called The Power of Fire. We are also implementing an driving while drunk program using real life driving simulators. Safety Village has its focus on all aspects of unintenional injuries and how they can be prevented.

  13. We are in process of starting a non-profit. Plans, mission statement goals and projections are completed along with preliminary business plan and some publicity materials. We do need help with funding. This was the brainchild of three friends who see several unmet needs in our community. We would like to emphasize helping families and individuals who are being negatively impacted by the economy. We are especially concerned with persons like ourselves who have run out of savings and don't qualify for programs that help those with young children or those who don't yet qualify for social security due to being below 65 years old.
We are a nurse, a non-profit administrator who has been disabled by knee surgeries and another semi-disabled person. We plan a center that will provide information and exchange of ideas and services. We have social workers, psychologist and MDs available. We would like to fund this by donations and set up of a Coffee House/ Book Cafe capable of employing some of our clients. In addition we plan to provide informational seminars and support groups.
We so far have used Social networks mostly for networking but will have a web page on facebook.

Our name is Women Empowering Families. We hope to help and empower all in need of services.

  14. I recently viewed a YMCA website your organization designed and was impressed by the ease of use and creativity the site included. I hope to learn more about the products and services you offer as we seek to engage and educate more people in our community as we puruse our cause of strengthening community.

  15. I am Ex Director of newly incorporate, but long-time operating, nonprofit: the Downtown Teens of Saint Louis. We focus on recruiting, training, and employing at-risk youth from our neighborhood. We are associated with the Catholic Worker movement, which also operates a shelter in our neighborhood with our help.

So far, we use twitter and facebook to recruit new teens, direct patrons and benefactors to our websites and announce new projects. Our blog is mostly limited to my blog with updates about the teens every so often.

    We need the help.

  16. I have a friend who works for the Mark Kilroy Foundation, which was founded in honor of Mark Kilroy who was brutally murdered in Mexico some years ago by drug traffickers.

Although founded with mission of preventing substance abuse, their focus has widened to helping troubled young people with a variety of issues, including domestic violence, teenage pregnancy, and life skills. They generally work through the school systems in the Greater Galveston/Brazoria County are, providing regular counseling for these at-risk children.

The foundation also supports a summer day camp program that provides a fun, educational experience. It is highly anticipated by the children who are able to attend at minimal cost to them.

Like so many other non-profits, donations have dwindled and their online presence is essentially non-existent.

I think it would help them so much to raise their profile via social media. They are a very lean operation and do great work.

    Thanks!

  17. Amigos de las America gives youth unprecedented leadership opportunities to exchange cultures in Latin America, empower youth there, and develop community initiatives. Our three pronged mission opens the eyes of youth to a broader global perspective.

We use social media to engage the alumni of our program effectively. In fact, a few month ago we gathered 1600 votes to win a $50,000 grant from Chase Giving through Facebook! So, we believe in the power of social media. However we’d like to appeal further to a broad audience, not just our base of supporters. Find us on twitter too: @ AMIGOS_Americas

    Thanks!

  18. Texas Children's Hospital Child Protection Program medically evaluates cases of child abuse and negelct and conducts prevention and awareness programs in Houston, Texas. Realizing that child abuse, teen dating violence and families with domestic violence are all interwoven, the team has partnered with a few other non-profits focusing on family violence to provide coordinate services and prevention. A program we hope to launch in 2011 teaches parents and their tweens/teens about social media with tying in the signs of healthy dating relationships.

  19. Overly's Country Christmas creates holiday memories and traditions for our community and for families at risks. We've being using Facebook for a year now and are approaching 3000 'likes'. On our Facebook page, we keep our fans informed of our event, preparation for our event and other activities that we get involved in with the community. During our event, we use Twitter to post up to the minute information of weather, traffic and any closings. Our goal this year during our off season if to not only keep fans informed about our organization but other venues and activities in the area. We'd like to become a source of information.

I would love to learn more, through the book and other tools about Beth's work and philosophy. Many of the small and mid-sized nonprofits in my area are struggling. I'm doing my best to help them survive and then thrive.
