Tendenci Updates – Job Instructions, Catalog Categories, Exporting Members, and all Sorts of Permissions

Well we’re at it again, mid October and we have some more updates for you.

1. Job provides guidance – Small update, but it’s the details that matter. Just a little bit of instruction, we understand that not everyone lives on the internet (just us) and a little bit of guidance never hurt anyone.

2. Rename (sub)categories in catalogs – Simply click on the category or subcategory, make your changes and click rename. This will update all catalogs with their updated (sub)category name.

3. Exporting Reports – We’ve recently started providing an export for your reports. Looking at a report is very useful, but that same report is much more useful if you can export the data and manage it – using spreadsheet focused software (e.g. excel, etc …)

4. International Jobs and Resumes – Tendenci has come a long way and we’re starting to stretch our legs a little further than we imagined. We’ve been working hard to make our features more useful to our national and international friends. One of the more recent contributions to this ideal is no longer requiring the U.S. Citizen field in either Jobs or Resumes.

5. Partial Administrator – With some of our latest permission updates, a user can now have permission to be an administrator in only certain sections of your Tendenci powered website.  In other words, permissions are now more robust and administrators can better control their users capabilities. Pretty neat huh?

Tendenci Updates for October – Cloning, Clean Console, Manage SEM, Password Updates, and Stuff

It’s the month of October and we have some spooky — ok exciting — updates to talk about.

1. Clone your forms and surveys – Now when you put in all the time to create either a form or a survey, you can duplicate your work simply by clicking a copy/clone page in the more options link.  Now you don’t have to start from scratch and you can simply edit the pieces you wish to change on your new form or survey.

2. Cleaner Console – Your console page has hidden the ‘other modules’ inside of a drop-down menu.  We’re neat-freaks just like you and don’t enjoy clutter.

3. Delete CMS Pages – You can now permanently delete a CMS page.  Simply click on the delete link found in the more options tab and click delete cms page.  This will take you to a page that will let you decide between moving an item to the trash or completely deleting it.

Permenantly Delete a CMS Page

4. New SEM Page + Google Analytics Tool – First and foremost, we have one page dedicated to helping you maintain your web sites search engine optimization tools.  One of the newest tools we’ve added is the ability to update your own Google Analytics code.  You can find this link to Manage your SEM on your console page.

5. One less step when building a web site – When you first create
your web site, you are no longer required to fill out the
authentication code.  Now the easy/fast creation of a web site just got
  one step faster.

6. New Password Procedures – As mentioned last week.  We’re a little more strict (read: secure) with your password.  You can no longer retrieve your password, only reset it.  This update was done with everyone’s security in mind, resetting your password is also a piece of cake.  Click on forgot password, follow the link sent to your email, and reset — then boogy down.

As always we appreciate your comments and look forward to creative genius.

Password Field on Membership Edit Page Looks Funny

When updating your membership, you might notice that the passwords look a little longer than usual.  I’m here to tell you, no need to worry.  What your seeing is just a reflex of some of our more recent updates.  Obviously we will get to correcting this deceptive field from looking so scary/confusing.

Till then, I’m just here to say it’s cool and all of your functionality will work well, as always.

Long-Looking Password

Tendenci updates on their way: New password procedures coming soon!

Well, we’re at it again!  As always, Security remains our top priority and the Tendenci team has been working on ways to maintain that Security to keep your site and members information safe and sound.  For the most part you won’t feel a thing, but here are some changes you might notice:

1. Passwords can no longer be emailed out – Emailing passwords is less than awesome in our book, as not all email servers hold the same level of security.  So while your passwords are always secure on OUR servers, if your email is passed to a not-so-secure email server it has the potential to be compromised.  And we don’t dig that at all.  (Skip down to #2 to see how your site will be handling forgotten passwords)

2. Forgot your password?  Make a new one! – In the past, if you forgot your password Tendenci would simply email it to you.  But now we are putting a new system in place and will send a registered User an email with a link to reset their password on the site.  Security first!

These Tendenci updates are not currently live, but expect to see them early this week.  We’ll give you a heads up on the Tendenci Blog when the update is complete and look to you to leave us comments and suggestions.

Your New Profile Page

Check out your new profile page.  This page was redesigned with clarity in mind, our goal was to encompass as much about you as possible.

The tabs allow you to easily manage your contacts, favorites, contributions, and groups.  You can find this page at <your-domain>/en/users/view/.

Please enjoy and tell us what you think.

Rename your Article Categories

All articles in Tendenci are associated with a category and subcategory.  A long awaited request has been the ability to rename (sub)categories.  I’m happy to announce that we are working on this feature and you can expect it within the next couple of weeks.

Already we’re seeing some room for improvement, but can’t wait to show you what we have so far.  Currently this feature will only allow you to rename.  Other requests have come to mind while building this, such as: moving a subcategory to another category, removing (sub)categories, and human error detection/prevention.

While it’s not likely that the latter features will be available in this next update, we just want you to know that we do have them in mind.

I’ll keep you posted, you keep your eyes peeled.

Wysiwyg (Text Editor) Firefox 3 Hyperlink Bug

Wysiwyg

Note: This only applies to people using the latest version of the firefox web browser which in this case is Firefox 3.

Our current wysiwyg (Text Editor), which is a 3rd party product created by Cutesoft, has an issue with text disappearing when you highlight it and then click the Insert Hyperlink button from the menu. We are aware of the issue and are currently in communication with Cutesoft support. You can view the support thread here. In the meantime, if you have both Firefox 3 and Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) installed, you can use IE7 to add/edit content.

Check out our new Tendenci Navigation Editor

We are pleased to announce that the new Tendenci Navigation Editor has been released.  Rearranging your navigation has never been easier with our new drag and drop interface, and it even incorporates some new features.

What you can expect from the new Editor:

  • Drag and Drop Interface for easy move, delete.
  • Click any link to edit the link details.
  • Easily make your links open in a new window
  • CSS class field for those more HTML inclined
  • Options to both save progress and publish.  Save your work as you go without worrying about your live site.
  • Automatic page building!

How does automatic page building work?

When you publish your navigation, the editor will look for links to pages within your site that might not exist yet.  If you use our Clean URL system (ie. link to a page like /promotions/ instead of /en/cms/?123 to generate a URL of www.yourdomain.com/promotions/), then the navigation editor will automatically create these pages for you if they don’t already exist.

The Navigation Editor will produce a list of the pages created and give you options to both Edit and Delete them.

These pages are NOT syndicated, because they will have no content until you put some content in, but don’t forget to syndicate them once they are ready!

A peak at the new interface:

Nav Editor Screenshot

But I liked the old one

Never fear! The original navigation editor will still be available to you, linked from the top of the new editor.  While we make these edits in an attempt to make your life easier, we realize some people have a system that works perfectly well for them, so if the old editor really tickles your fancy, we understand.

A note to Internet Explorer 6 users

We are currently working on support for the new editor in deprecated browsers.  For the time being, the new editor is available only for IE 7+.  You can continue using the Tendenci Nav Editor classic until we can get all the bugs sorted out.

Greater control over your Tendenci site with Template Editor

Tendencitemplateeditor

Do you want more control over the template you see on your Tendenci site? Want
to implement your own custom HTML code? The Tendenci template editor now puts
the power in hands. Very similar to the style editor in both functionality and
interface, the template editor allows you to tweak the layout of your
website.

You may notice that the template and style editor both do not
sit in the template of your website like most Tendenci modules do. We have moved
these tools out of the template for 2 reasons:

1. You have more space to
see your code, which should make it easier to edit.
2. We all make mistakes,
so if you accidently publish a Template that causes some serious problems on
your site, you can quickly return to the Template Editor and revert to a
previous version!

You may be asking yourself, how to I know what areas
are needed on the template? The template editor does some automatic checks when
you click the save/publish buttons that will let you know of possible problems
in the template.

You can find the templates editor in the Tendenci &
Other Tools
section of the console. Don’t forget, if you have any questions
please contact our wonderful support team!

Edit your Cascading Style sheets with our new Style Sheet Editor

Tendencistylesheeteditor

Tendenci web site CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) is now editable by site administrators. The new style sheet editor lets you edit, save, and publish your styles. It also remembers your previously saved styles (revisions) and allows you to restore them if you wish to revert to older styles. Here are some help files that can get you started:

  1. How do I use the style sheet editor?
  2. How do I save or publish a style sheet?
  3. How do I open/restore a revision style sheet?
