Friday Fun Post: Houston Restaurant Week at Brennan’s

As a transplant to Houston, I have a long list of restaurants I have yet to try. Brennan’s is a Schipul client, and also extremely high on that list.

With reservations moving quickly in the first months since the February reopening and my budget going to other things lately, I hadn’t taken the plunge. Until last night for Restaurant Week.

Restaurant Week

Restaurant “Week” is a bit of a misnomer, the event actually lasts for the 3 weeks from August 1- August 21. Local restaurants offer a $35 three course dinner, with $5 of your meal cost going directly to the Houston Food Bank (the event is completely organized by volunteers, so every penny goes to the cause). New this year is the $20 two course lunch, with $3 going to the food bank. Eat great food with great friends for a great cause? Sign me up!

Brennan’s

It’s beautiful inside, somehow classic and modern at the same time, and it feels very posh when the waiter points to the corner table next to you with the high backed yellow armchairs and says “that’s where George H.W. Bush likes to sit when he comes.” The staff was fantastic, and the food was delicious.

I was dining with a group of LSU alums who know their Cajun food, so it was great to see them gush over the Bread Pudding and Pralines. For me, the sweet things stole the show – the peaches and candied pecans in my salad, the pecan crust on my fish, and the Bananas Foster (prepared table side with a huge impressive flame).

Brennan’s Restaurant Week Menu

1st
Turtle Soup Au Sherry
Cooper Farms Peach Salad
Summer Tomato Salad

2nd
Pecan Crusted Gulf Fish
Black Grouper & Local Field Peas
Tournedos of Beef

3rd
Texas Blueberry Shortcake
Creole Bread Pudding Soufflé
Traditional Bananas Foster

Don’t worry, it’s not too late!

You have until August 21 to enjoy Restaurant Week. Check out houstonrestaurantweek.com for participating restaurants and menus, and make a reservation now at a restaurant you’ve always wanted to try!

Happy dining!

To Sakowitz We Go…With Kris Kristofferson

The Schipuites (just Ed, really) recently bid on a puppet from The Bloggess on Ebay.

His name is Kristopher Kristofferson. He is weird. He is furry. But we love him (?) and needed him cleaned…and to stop shedding. So we took him to the only place we could think of: Sakowitz Furs, baby!

Empirical  evidence suggests that when you walk into a top-of-the-line establishment with a disheveled hand puppet, a three-step reaction process is inevitable:

Step 1: Confusion

Step 2: Acceptance

Step 3: Excitement

The Sakowitz staff was amazingly accommodating!

As they said, “it’s a hand puppet, so it needs to be hand cleaned.”  When you really think about it (which you probably shouldn’t) it’s great to know that a friendly, professional staff is available to help care for your beloved fur puppets.   This will undoubtedly help all of you sleep better at night.  Check out more reactions from the Sakowitz staff and innocent bystanders on Flickr and Facebook.

Friday Fun Post: And That’s Why IKEA Totally Rocks!

Shipulites pose for the mock IKEA catalog at the IKEA 2011 Catalog preview party

Special thanks to photographer Annie Ray for the wonderful photo! To see more of her work or more photos from the event visit her site: www.AnnieRay.net

*Sigh* I love you IKEA.

Long before it was a Schipul client and I was Schipulite, IKEA was my home goods haven.

I’m a neat freak. Let’s just get that out of the way.

Also, it’s pronounced /ee-KAY-uh/. I promise. Let’s get that out of the way, too.

Yesterday I Went on a Field Trip to IKEA’s Cafeteria

*Faints*Food at Ikea is reasonably priced.

It was exciting. And that’s when the magic of it all hit me, and I realized how much I love this place.

The menu is decent. The food is good. The view isn’t bad. So what’s the magic you ask?

For me, it’s the same magic most sane people feel when they open the catalog and start imagining the room they’ll build with the furniture they’re eyeballing.

Eating in IKEA’s cafeteria is like eating in IKEA’s catalog.

And I’m not afraid to admit it:   I’d love to live in the IKEA catalog. (The photos that Annie Ray took at the IKEA 2011 Catalog Preview Party prove that most people would!)

Some of the menu items include their famous Swedish meatballs, organic pasta and Princess Cake. Also, shoppers can purchase some of the goods in the Swedish Food Market section of the store and take the yummy goodness home. (It’s near the Bistro/Exit Cafe‘, which is a whole other blog post).

I’m Still A Neat Freak

The best part of the experience came with putting away my tray.   There’s a pretty blue wall, and in front it looks like a condiment station. But be not fooled! The hind side of the wall holds a shelving system just for trays. It’s the most efficient, DIY, tray taking system I’ve ever seen. I shed a tear (@happykatie saw it…maybe).

I encourage you to visit the restaurant. No. You’re not gonna get a five-star, Zagat-rated meal. But you’ll get good food in a pretty place. And who wouldn’t want that?

Boss Blog of the Month: Nataliedee.com baby!

Boss [baws, bos]

-adjective
1. exemplifies a unique quality; awesome; incredible
2.   An expression from the mid 1950s, which fell from favor by the early 1960s….until now...

When I was introduced to Natalie Dee, I wanted to hug her. Granted, we were not formally introduced and to digress from creepy status, I can tell you one thing – she is a satirical comic genius who totally digs Wu Tang.

I bet you want to hug her now too.

Nataliedee.com has become my daily affirmations – not necessarily by definition. Through her comics she expresses her real life encounters, vulnerabilities, conversations and of course, her addiction to diet coke. Browsing through her unique art you may even think to yourself, “maybe I’m not the only one with a screw loose…there really is someone else who enjoys Turban Tuesday.”

And over the past couple of years, I have come to realize that her comics serve a dual purpose. Because Natalie Dee is seemingly well rounded, her comics come in handy for any and all human exchanges (use of comic’s impact is likely greater if you are at a loss for words). I have created real fictional instances below in hopes that you will recognize why Natalie Dee is so BOSS.

Are you in an altercation?

Instead of lying down like a coward in the fetal position, use this little gem.   Your nemesis will walk away out of mere confusion. This is also an ideal time to holler, ‘Booyah!”

Do you own a cat?

Me either. So if you find yourself surrounded by cat lovers in deep conversation about LOLz…attempt to relate.

Did your sister-in-law just get pregnant?

Nothing will express your excitement more than a rainbow.

Are you running late for work?

Turtles are slow’ how could your boss ever refute that one?

Are you awkward?

This one is great for the time you held the door open for a complete stranger and they proceeded to call you ‘awkward.” You turn-around and you show them awkward…

Not into politics?

There will never be a winner of a political debate held down the street at your local pub…until you prance in the door.

Enjoy the Moutain Dew/Nerd combo?

Dew the dew bra! That’s all I really have to say about this one.

Did you make a bad decision?

While explaining the situation to your parents, ease the mood with a cupcake. Hey, it could always be worse…

Overwhelmed by technology trends?

No need to worry your pretty little head about it. Reply to the office email about iPhone 4 discrepancies with this farcical treasure’ Nutella does wonders my friends.

Do you like adorable creatures?

When saying it in words won’t do you justice, this princess works for all occasions.

IKEA Houston 2011 Catalog Preview Party!

The 2011 IKEA Catalog Preview Party was a BLAST!

Hosts IKEA Houston (disclosure: client) and Houston magazine treated guests to hors d’ourves, cocktails and a live DJ along with four complimentary workshops from IKEA professionals. Not to mention we spent an evening basking in organizational, cute furniture, find your style,   do-it-yourself bliss. Friday Fun Post: NERDS AND GEEKS ONLY.

Guys, do you know what today is? No, it is not just Friday, July 23rd. It is COMIC-CON!

For those not in the know (even though the title of this post specifically says for nerds and geeks only), San Diego Comic-Con kicked off yesterday. SDCC is the largest and most amazing comic convention and is the dream vacation for almost every nerd in the world.

The meat of the convention actually happens during Saturday and Sunday, though today is the big film festival, portfolio review, and the Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards.

No, I am NOT at the convention this year. I am simply too busy doing awesome things for awesome clients at the moment. However, I am keeping constant tabs on what is going on in the geek-o-sphere. For this edition of Friday Fun Post, I am providing a list of the best ways to keep track of the awesomesauce-ness of SDCC.

UGO.com
One of my personal favorite sources for the latest news.  Because of UGO, I heard the exciting news that there will be an Avatar sequel.   (I’m not talking about that movie with the smurfs.)

Comic Vine
One of the best sources for comic news is now one of the best sources for Comic-Con news.   They feature a feed of their Twitter accounts with real-time updates and there are forums to jump into when the news feed slows or takes a break between sessions. I am in love with them.

IGN
Looks like big boy IGN is doing a full-court press on the convention. They have their news split up so that you can find what your main interest is and go after it. This is a rad feed for anyone who is not super geeky but is interested in what is going on.

GameSpot
You have got to give props to GameSpot’s coverage of the gaming side of SDCC. They are doing interviews, posting trailers, and they even have a live camera feed. If you love the PS3 over the Xbox 360, then you can filter the updates based on your platform preference.

Topless Robot
Rob is the man behind Topless Robot and he has decided to blog about his adventure at SDCC in his typical snarky fashion.   For a guy running his own blog, he is actually providing more useful information than WIRED.

ScreenRant
If you are more interested into the movie/film side of what’s taking place at Comic-Con, ScreenRant is doing an excellent job of posting news and trailers at rapid fire. Bust out the snacks and watch enough videos to waste your day.

G4
G4 is actually filming live from SDCC, so get your fill this weekend. But, if you don’t have cable or if you won’t be in front of a television, definitely check out their online live feed of what is going on at the different panels.

If following websites is a little overwhelming, make sure you use the power of   searching Twitter.   Or, even better, follow SDCC updates on Tumblr:

  1. http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/SDCC
  2. http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/comic-con

My final recommendation is the one and only YouTube where screenings, trailers, previews, interviews, and everything else is up for watching:   Comic-Con on Youtube.

That’s the list of awesome I have for you kids today. Before I take off, I want to leave you all with a gift. That’s right, a breakdown/preview of the new animated amazingness of Young Justice:

(Oh, and I would like to brag that I got see “Batman: Under the Red Hood” before it’s release and yes, I will in fact be seeing an advance screening of   “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World”)

The YMCA Kicks Off Operation Backpack

Operation Backpack helps collect backpacks filled with school supplies for children in-need.

This week marked the start of the YMCA of Greater Houston‘s school supply drive, “Operation Backpack.”

Having the right tools is a big part of being successful. The YMCA is working to give back to the Houston community and help children in-need ease into the new school year with a new backpack and school supplies. The goal is to reach 40,000 backpacks by Aug. 15.

How Does Operation Backpack Work

  • Operation Backpack works just as you’ve probably imagined. Using a   list of recommended school supplies (available on the YMCA’s website), donors will:
  • Purchase a new backpack for a child in elementary or middle school.
  • Buy school supplies and put them in the backpack.
  • Write a note of encouragement to the child and put in the backpack.
  • Drop off the backpack at any Houston YMCA or participating business, church, or organization drop-off location between now and Aug. 15th.

Donate Online

Another great way to participate in Operation Backpack is to make an online donation.

The online donations will go towards a $50 school supply shopping spree hosted by the YMCA. Donors can give a general gift or make a donation to a YMCA location of choice.

Be A Drop-Off LocationOperatoin Backpack'sgoal is to fill 40,000 backpacks for children in need.

Operation Backpack will run from now through Aug. 15, so there’s still time to sign-up to be a drop-off location. It’s a perfect way help make donating to the program convenient and easy for people in your area. Just fill out the sign-up form on the YMCA’s Operation Backpack site and submit it.

For additional information or to find a YMCA near you, contact the YMCA of Greater Houston at 713-659-5566 or contact:

Open Your Mind With Mental Notes

Are you stuck on a project and you can’t seem to finish it? Maybe you’re creating a new product and can’t seem to find a direction. If so, meet Mental Notes, a little box of goodness designed to find creative solutions to problems. More specifically, the box houses 50 cards each featuring an aspect of human behavior based on research from game design to neuroscience. Some of the cards include themes like curiosity, reputation and limited choice. I chose to use limited choice for today’s example because of how applicable it is to many situations.

When you first open the box you will notice the cards definitely have a game-like feel to them, sort of like a playing card game. The layout of the card is simple to follow: the top featuring the title in bold, in our case “Limited Choice”. Underneath the intent is listed, there are 4 intents used throughout the cards: persuasion, memory, attention, and understanding, and in our case we have “Persuasion”.   While there are no formal grouping to the cards, each card contains one (or more) keywords conveying how the card can be used, which helped give me direction when I used the cards. I now know that our card “Limited Choice” should be used to persuade people to use our product. Under the intent we are given the definition in italics, in our case, “We’re more likely to make a choice when there are fewer options“, which instantly made me think about simplifying my project because maybe I”m trying to solve to many problems at once. The definition can be used in many different ways, for example if I was trying to sell a product maybe I should offer fewer version to make it easier for customers to decide. The power in the game lies within the many different ways people can perceive the cards, because since there is no right way to use the ideas you are free to apply the them to any problem you encounter. The middle displays a small drawing which ended up helping me tremendously by showing the idea in a visual representation (a big plus for all of the visual learners out there!). In this case, the image showed several people in line for a buffet, which of course featured few selections. If nothing else, the images intrigued me to read about the image, because my eyes tend to glaze over if all I see is text. Lastly, the card features Application Ideas at the bottom, which shows some advice or asks questions in order to start your brainstorming. In this case, the card asked us, “For each page of your website, how many choices do you offer? Can this be reduced?”. As I read the card I could already feel my mind going in a different direction. If your ever stuck all you really need to do is close your eyes, pick up a card and ask your self “How can I use [card] to [goal], and you will starting thinking different too.

In my opinion, Mental Notes is the kindle you need in a meeting. They help start the fire that is brainstorming and can take your project (and mind) in new directions. The creator of Mental Notes Stephen Anderson is a passionate design consultant who speaks and writes about his customer experiences. He has spent the last several years developing Mental Notes because he felt “In the midst of a busy project, it can be all too easy to focus on the essentials and lose track of the nuances that distinguish great products”.

If you aren’t lucky enough to already own a set, then I only have one question for you readers, Where do you find inspiration for your projects? If you answer this question below you will automatically be entered for a chance to win your own copy of Mental Notes! This is our month’s book club giveaway (yes, we know this technically isn’t a book, we are just going mental!). Let the comment love commence!
