Culintro hits 1,500th member milestone

A big “wow” and “congratulations” go out to the folks at Culintro, one of our newer customers who use Tendenci to manage their Web site and membership. In just a few short months they have registered 1,500 members after starting from scratch earlier in the year. Clearly, that rapid growth suggests they are satisfying a need for executives in the restaurant industry. Check out the news release for more details.

Tendenci Powered Culintro Site Quickly Attracts 1,500 Members

Culintro, the Culinary Trade Organization for restaurant professionals, is off to a fast start.  Just a few months after launching the organization with a Web site powered by Tendenci, Culintro has registered its 1,500th member. That's pretty amazing. Clearly, there was a need in the restaurant industry for the types of services that Culinto is delivering. Their Web site enables members to post jobs, review job listings and post resumes — a critically important service in this difficult economy and one that every organization should be providing. They also have events and promotions — mostly in the New York City area for now, but likely to expand as the organization continues to mature. Congratulations to Culintro on their successful launch!

Funny Video of the Day – Master of the Internet

In a matter of months Schipul will be celebrating it’s 12th anniversary. I can’t believe we’ve been around since 1997 and according to this video set in 1997 you will be able to ‘Master the Internet’ in a matter of months as well.

I found this video informative and topical as well. I’m thinking about ordering some for myself so I can learn how to do the following:

  • Get sports scores
  • Chatting with women
  • Taxes
  • Football scores
  • Chatting with men         about football
  • Egyptian literature
  • Sending electronic M

I love talking to men         about football and I’ve always wanted to send an electronic M, who knows maybe some day I could learn how to send an electronic R or Q.

I feel so inspired!

And how wise is the Master of the Internet? If you ask him what the capital of Dallas is it will only take him 10 minutes on the internet to tell you the current temperature of Dallas. Not exactly what was asked but a Master should always be mysterious, according to Sun Tzu. Besides, everyone knows the capital of Dallas is Houston. wink

Another great piece of advice that Dale gives is that ‘no one can make money on the internet’ so don’t even bother trying!

Boss Blog of the Month: Neurofibromatosis Cafe

Boss [baws, bos]

Reggie Bibbs
Reggie Bibbs

-adjective
1. exemplifies a unique quality; awesome; incredible
2.   An expression from the mid 1950s, which fell from favor by the early 1960 until now.
Hey dude, do you know Reggie Bibbs? I heard his blog is so boss.

As I stand sit here, amongst a sea of people, adorning my wizards’ cloak and wand, I feel the need to rise up…for today marks the start of something glorious! No, they have not finally captured the French Big Foot named Clouseau and put him on display in Canada. Come on dude. This friends, is the beginning of a new era…a place where bloggers can be exalted for a job well done. A place where I can sit here every month and say…This Blog is So Boss.

Like all historic revolutions, I must start out with a bang followed by a little pow. Hell, let’s throw in a 540 tornado kick, landing in a roundout back flip – blindfolded. It’s true, some blogs just have that affect on people, and ninja moves aside, I am honored to feature a local Houston blog, ‘Neurofibromatosis Cafe as the boss blog of the month.

So what you’re saying is there’s a new place in town for coffee and tweet-ups? Coffeegroundz what? Unfortunately no but there is a man named Reggie Bibbs.   Reggie was born with neurofibromatosis (NF) which is a genetic disease that causes him to develop tumors on his body. He began this blog, along with long-time friend Lou Congelio, president of STANANDLOU Advertising, to spread the word of NF.

I recently had the opportunity to speak with Reggie and it became one of those moments where you think to yourself…so this is what life is all about. His passion and spirit were infectious as he spoke about what his blog has provided for people.

‘I believe my blog has helped others to realize that things aren’t as bad as they seem. If I am out and happy with my problems, then others should be to. It is an encouragement to people with NF and without NF.

So how did Reggie’s blog become what it is today? Reggie explained to me that it was after his brother, Ronald, lost his life to NF that he was not going to let anyone else go through what his family had to endure. Teaming up with Lou, they created the Just Ask T-shirts

‘I had the shirts made so people would ASK when they saw me. People wanted to know, but I felt like they didn’t know how to ask. After the shirts, Lou suggested a blog to write about my experiences.

And as they says the rest is history.

The Just Ask campaign went on to win 2 gold ADDY awards, one silver, and a Special Judges Award for Public Service Advertising. I would never claim to be an advertising genius, or a pro unicorn jouster for that matter, but I do know that the Just Ask ads were absolutely spectacular and the well earned recognition could not have happened to a better guy that’s you chief.

Reggie is also lucky enough to have Lou, along with two other of his close friends, William and Matt contribute to the blog. These guys have not only helped document Reggie’s experiences but they have played a huge part in bringing NF to the forefront.

‘These guys mean the world to me. Without them, I would not be able to do what I do. They are the friends that encourage me to get out there and do things. When Lou talked me into going to the Astros game, it was something I will never forget. It was a full house everyone was so nice to me and because I took that step, I felt like I could go other places.

No doubt about it, Reggie has definitely become the man about town. Through his blog posts, you can see what an impact Reggie is making in the community. He has spoken across the country for other NF Foundations where his most recent trip was to Grand Rapids next stop Canada. Here’s a fun fact: I am a ninja and can fit in medium-sized suitcases; specifically designed to fly to Canada I’m just sayin’.

When he is not traveling, you can see him at the Houston Roller Derby, meeting with political figures, chummin’ it up with Kevin Nealon, starting the dance revolution at Music Nites really, the list goes on and to be quite honest, I’m not yearning for carpal tunnel anytime soon so I will bid adieu. But before I ‘do I want to leave you with one final thought from a man who used something as simple as a blog to create a movement and therefore inspire others to simply be thankful.

‘People who have NF come to my blog to read my stories and learn that even if you have NF, you can still live a full life. They see that I have learned that most people will understand the ones that don’t, that’s ok. Think about the people that have accepted you. Reggie Bibbs

Trend Tuesday – Will Bing cut into Google’s market share?

You’ve probably seen the commercials, and maybe even the tweets. Microsoft is putting its hat into the search ring (again). This time, it’s shiny and new (and rebranded) with Microsoft’s “Decision Engine” called Bing.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIxfk3hS0uU&feature=channel

How it works

Bing is marketed as a “decision” engine – it displays results based on what Bing thinks is most helpful. Bing is fully equipped with what Microsoft is touting as a powerful set of intuitive tools to “help you make smarter, faster decisions.”

Bing decision making engine

Image searches allow you to view related searches, filter results by size, layout, color, style, and people… and customize your view. Mouseover an image and to give feedback on the result, and view similar images.

So, how’s it doing?

The SEM blog reported Bing’s release two weeks ago. So what has happened since then?

Bing had 11% of the search market share last week, according to Comscore. Much of this has to do with the fact that it’s Internet Explorer’s default search engine, and the television commercials may have people going on to just “check it out”…   but the bottom line is that 11% after two weeks is nothing to sneeze at. For now.

Also, advertisers are reporting that heat tracking studies have shown Bing’s ad placement to be more effective than even Google’s. There’s that good old Microsoft know-how at work!

See for yourself

Keep watching this little engine that could. If Microsoft continues to innovate and give the people what they want – a way to cut through the clutter of search – they could take a niche group out of Google’s market share. One thing’s for sure – it’s “differentiate or get out” time… and that’s what Microsoft seems to get.

Oh, and no, there is no Bing iPhone app yet!

Ten Things I Love About Tendenci Updates!

3330871182_0690ae80c3 This week has been a big programming week! We've got a bunch of super cool updates coming for you guys to look forward to that will make your Tendenci powered site even more functional and fun to use…. for both your users and you.

  1. Tendenci sites have gone mobile! They can now have the power to detect mobile browsers and redirect; this will make browsing on the go easy as pie for your user. Check out Reliant Park's mobile site for a great example.
  2. Want to choose how your albums are sorted in Tendenci? You now have the ability to sort your photo albums in whatever order you want!
  3. We love Numbered Lists and we've incorporated that into our Comments. Counting comments are a thing of the past because now they are numbered! This makes it easier to manage your comments than ever before.
  4. You'll be able to get stats from Google Analytics with ease. Sign up for the SEM Newsletter to get more information on this update later this week!
  5. Wonky User Group Names will soon be a thing of the past. As we move forward we will be substituting the User Group Name with the
prettier User Group Label used in Custom Contact Forms.
  6. Tendenci now works with Constant Contact! It's pretty basic for now but we'll be making it more robust in the future. Check out our blog post from last week for more information!
  7. It will be even easier to use the Photo Module to tell your story! When these updates are complete you'll be able to pull the photos from your Tendenci Photo Module to a cool button anywhere on your site you'd like.
  8. The Resume Module and the User Module are no longer tied together. This means you can make the Resumes Module inactive if you aren't using it and it won't affect your Users in the least bit. Contact Support for help!

Read about awesome updates 9 and 10 in this blog post about Calendar Events!!

These updates aren't live yet but will be by the end of the week so get excited! You'll be able to search our helpfiles for more information and as always, you can contact Schipul Support for help.

New Calendar Event Updates give you even MORE Control!

Our programmers have been hard at work and this week we have two really awesome Calendar Events updates rolling out that will make registering for your events and then sharing your events with friends even easier! You're going to love them.

Want your users to be able to tell their friends on Facebook about your events? We've integrated Facebook Connect with Tendenci so now they can!

Untitled-6 What does this mean to you? Now, from your Tendenci driven website, your users will be able to register for one of your events and tell all of their friends on Facebook about it in one step! This means more fun for your users and more free publicity for your event. It's a win-win!

Check out this helpfile for more details on how Facebook Connect works.

Calendar events now have custom registration forms!

Mod_2

We're putting you in the driver's seat with this update! You'll get to decide exactly which information you wish to collect from your visitors when they register for your event and how you want to present your registration form to them.

 Some super cool features include:

  1. You'll be able to collect as much information from your visitors as you’d like using whichever input variety you prefer. This means you can use everything from text-boxes to check-boxes (plus more!) to get the information you need.
  2. You can make your registration forms prettier than ever before. You'll be able to section your forms with different lines and text headers to communicate with your visitors exactly what you want.
  3. You can easily update the order you collect information from registrants by dragging and dropping elements wherever you desire.
  4. Don't want to make everyone fill out every little thing? Make some fields required and others not, it’s completely up to you

Ever want to register friends for an event and not have all of their details? No problem! Now with our custom registration forms, you can allow your users to register anonymous so that they can register for all of their friends (and perhaps get a discount rate) without filing in everything immediately.

This last change gives your users even more freedom to bring friends to their events. Even if they don't know exactly who they want to bring, they can still get registered!
